YouTube Red, not to be confused with Red Tube (Google that at your own risk) is here for the masses. This new paid service will cost you $9.99 a month, putting it in line with other streaming services and will offer users an ad-free YouTube experience (Shhh, we don’t talk about AdBlock here).
Membership to the service actually offers you a little more than just an ad-free experience, it’ll also give you access to original shows and movies from a number of major YouTube content creators including the likes of PewDiePie, The Fine Brothers, and more. It’s yet to be seen how many normal YouTube viewers bite for this new service, but content creators are walking a fine line by locking away certain content behind a pay-wall to what has always been a free service.
On October 28 users will be able to sign up for a month-long trial of the service. While this paid service may be nice for those that spend a lot of time on YouTube, I do wonder how it will affect those mid-tier YouTube channels that rely on ad revenue to keep new content coming out? If you aren’t seeing the ad through the service, are they still getting residuals? And if the feature does see huge success, will all of YouTube follow the model in the future? Food for thought.
