YouTube Blocks Videos For Users Employing Ad Blockers

Pop up no video.

Bad news; YouTube has finally had enough of your ad blocker. And, since they can now detect it, the site will actually refuse to play videos for you until you either disable your ad blocker or buy YouTube Premium.

According to 9To5Google, Reddit user Sazk100 was about to watch a video (with an ad blocker on) when the following pop up ground things to a halt:

This isn’t technically in full force yet, though. According to a YouTube employee, this is currently in the testing phase. Depending on how users react to it, it may be fully implemented in the future. If users cave or buy Premium, that may seal the deal.

While Premium does remove ads and provide offline downloads and access to YouTube Music, it’s also ~$120 a year (more if you’re paying monthly). While they’re also tossing in experimental features like higher-quality 1080p, it might be hard to justify for the price when you consider that at its most basic, YouTube is a free-to-use site. The less said about the security liability at least some ads from scammers pose the better. And for those on limited data plans or devices that handle a bombardment of ads poorly…

Long story short, we might see a renaissance in the ad blocker arms race.
