You know what I’m linking to, here.
Yes, the inevitable has finally happened. Youtube has made the decision to shut down YouTube Originals, their original content development group. You might know them from such popular shows as Cobra Kai and… uh…
Gonna be honest; aside from Cobra Kai, I imagine most people pinged the YouTube Originals lineup as a bunch of vanity projects for YouTube’s already popular content creators. PewDiePie had a show called Scare PewDiePie, which was going to have a second season until he said some anti-semetic joke and, during a stream, he said one of the words you can’t get away with saying unless you’re Black, are acting in a brutal period piece set in the pre-Civil War American South, or are Quentin Tarantino.
Regardless, the service started life as YouTube Red, an attempt to take a bit of that sweet, sweet money Netflix Originals was making out of Netflix’s mouth. That, uh, clearly didn’t work out for them. And, yes, the irony of the fact that Cobra Kai moved to Netflix starting in its third season and essentially became one of those Netflix Originals is palpable.
That said, YouTube Premium, which once granted access to YouTube Originals and continues to provide an ad-free YouTube experience, as well as YouTube Music, is sticking around. It goes for $12 a month, which is probably a deal if you find yourself on YouTube a lot.
