To be fair, many YouTubers would argue that they’ve been getting screwed by the platform.
According to Motherboard, YouTube has been running an ad that, with a click, leads to porn. Just straight up, hardcore fuckin’. No joke.
The ad displays a woman gyrating her hips, alongside a link titled “Hot Girl 2018”. Said link actually redirects to a page managed by CamSoda, which deals in pornographic webcams. Of course, if you’ve played the “get _____ for free” shuffle before, you’ve probably already guessed that it will also redirect you to a number of virus-ridden scam sites as well.
The ad has supposedly been running since at least December last year. And it seems to have had wide reach, appearing before YouTube videos by Markiplier, PewDiePie, and DudePerfect, just to name a few. Motherboard was able to track the video to a channel titled “1.347.852 views” which had nothing but multiple videos of the same woman dancing, though said channel has since been taken down.
It’s even worse, since Google actually prohibits such ads outside of specific scenarios:
Ads should respect user preferences and comply with legal regulations, so we don’t allow certain kinds of adult content in ads and destinations. Some kinds of adult-orientated ads and destinations are allowed if they comply with the policies below and don’t target minors, but they will only show in limited scenarios based on user search queries, user age and local laws where the ad is being served.
Examples of restricted adult content: strip clubs, erotic cinemas, sex toys, adult magazines, sexual enhancement products, matchmaking sites, models in sexualised poses
Either way, it could be worse. This could’ve crossbred a horrible hybrid brood with those Pregnant Elsa and Spider-Man videos plaguing YouTube for a while (and probably continuing to). Or even worse: Baby Mickey Dies from Auto-erotic Asphyxiation while Baby Minnie Camwhores Herself Out Kids Cartoons 2018 Educational Learn Colors Shapes.
*shudder*
