A little clock that terrifies normies.
YouTube has been stepping up their war against ad blockers. Previously, they employed pop ups, as well as implementing a three-strike policy. And now, much like your mother, they’re adding a timer to the mix.
The news comes from Android Police, who report that several Reddit users have noticed something new in the pop up. When YouTube detects that you’re using an ad blocker, a new version of their previous popup extolling the virtues of buying YouTube Premium appears as it did previously; but this time, there’s a 30-60 second timer.
The feature is still in testing, meaning it may not appear for you depending on your current geographical location. But it’s entirely likely that when this test concludes, they’ll roll it out in full. Which will likely be the point at which ad blockers step up their arms race.
As for YouTube Premium, well, last month saw a price hike of an extra $2 monthly/$20 yearly, bringing the price for the service to $13.99 monthly and $139.99 a year in the U.S. Considering the primary impetus to purchase a subscription is to avert the suite of (somewhat user-unfriendly) changes YouTube has made to the platform, it’s not terribly surprising that people don’t want to pay for it.
