Don’t hope for a massive payday.
So, you may or may not be aware of the massive class-action lawsuit that Facebook-parent Meta has been dealing with. The suit was based around Facebook sharing user data with third parties, which users naturally took exception to.
December saw Meta agree to a $725 million settlement, and a Judge recently approved the deal on a tentative basis.
To get a piece of that settlement, users must submit a valid claim by 11:59 PM on Friday, August 25th, 2023. To be eligible, you need to have lived in the U.S. between May 24, 2007, and Dec. 22, 2022. If you deleted your Facebook account since the end of 2022, you need to provide the date range of your use of the platform.
If you don’t want to receive benefits from the settlement, you can opt out no later than June 26th, 2023. If you fail to meet that date, you surrender any right to start a lawsuit, continue a lawsuit, or join any other lawsuit against Meta, and also lose out on any payment from this settlement.
Each member is limited to a single claim (it’s per user;your alts, if any, don’t count for a separate claim). The funds will be distributed via your choice of prepaid Mastercard, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or direct deposit. That all being said, there will be a final approval hearing on September 7th to determine whether to approve the settlement or not. This could lead to delays on the payment schedule due to appeals and the like.
