YOLKED – The Egg Game Review

YOLKED - The Egg Game

Getting YOLKED!

YOLKED – The Egg Game (or more simply just YOLKED) is a physics-based platformer by Hardboiled Studios and published by Hitcents.

You are an egg with arms, and you are trying to make your big escape from the kitchen of a man that really doesn’t seem to like his family. And to do that, you’ll need to learn how to climb and swing. And also, avoid getting cracked.

YOLKED is intended to be played with a gamepad (I myself used a wired Nintendo Switch controller). I genuinely can’t imagine playing this game using a mouse and keyboard.

YOLKED plays similar to the sorts of games Bennet Foddy is known for, only more forgiving. There are checkpoints (shaped like egg cups) scattered around the levels. And every time you reach one, it’s a bit of a relief, especially after a difficult section. Important, as while the game is more forgiving thanks to them, it doesn’t exactly go easy on you. Notably, any element that shifted based on weight presents a significant challenge to me, because I’m not the sort to make quick leaps in games like this.

As you travel across levels, you’ll encounter pickups and other events which present you with cosmetics. Supposedly, you’re able to automatically equip these with a single button press. I was never able to get this to work, though I’m chalking that up to my not properly configuring my controller in Steam. Still, they’re nice to have.

While I had to run it at the lowest settings due to my PC’s affinity for butter, sour cream and chives, the draw isn’t necessarily graphics. That’s not to say that the game is visually bad; far from it.The team definitely put in effort to make the many objects in the game, and to have them all match aesthetically. But it’s also not going to wow anyone who thinks that photorealism is the visual standard to which games should strive. If I had one nitpick, it would be that it’s not always totally clear which objects can be grabbed on to, but it’s far from the biggest problem in the world.

Overall, YOLKED – The Egg Game is fun. And at around $7 on Steam, it’s definitely worth the price of admission. So get yoked and fling a buff egg around the place, you’ll have fun.

YOLKED- The Egg Game provides a swinging good time. Just don’t let yourself crack.
