Xcaliber PS4 Adjustable Triggers

Performance is power, and getting the most out of your game is key to sitting on top of the leaderboard of your favorite game. Getting the most out of ones experience and getting the edge over your opponent is more important than ever now that eSports are a big thing. Aside from outright cheating (just don’t) or getting a T1 line installed in your home, there is very little that can be done to improve your game experience on a home console. Sure, the PC has whatsits and wingdings aplenty in mice with funny grips and insane DPI settings, to keyboards with mechanical keys and macros, but console gamers have generally been stuck with the stock controllers. The Xbox One is currently experimenting with their Elite Controller, but the PlayStation 4 has no such option. This is where TriggerKing comes into the picture with their latest Xcaliber PS4 Adjustable Triggers.

This isn’t the first time we’ve featured TriggerKing on this site, most recently taking a look at the triggers the company made for the PlayStation 3. We loved those and the precision they added to games, so getting to look at these new models for the PS4 had us excited. The Xcaliber triggers are similar to the PS3 Pro Triggers of old, but designed to fit over the triggers of the newer PlayStation 4 controller. The Xcaliber triggers come in a new packaging style that includes the two triggers, a fine screwdriver for the adjustment (the old models used a very tiny allen key), cleaning wipes for controller prep, and extra adhesive strips.

The first difference you are going to notice with these PS4 triggers over the PS3 ones is in how they attach to the controller. The PS3 controller had different triggers that allowed TriggerKing to create triggers that snaped onto them for a perfect fit. The PS4 doesn’t have the same design, so instead the new Xcaliber triggers use a strong adhesive to attach to the controller. I was wary of this new choice, but after a week of intense play everything feels as good as the old design did, if not more secure somehow. The additional adhesive strips also allow you to replace them if the need ever arises. Sure, the old design is still superior as I could remove the triggers for controller storage, but this really couldn’t be done on the new PS4 controllers.

Adjusting the triggers themselves is easier than ever with the new screwdriver included, and the helpful tutorial video on the TriggerKing website is a must to get the perfect setup. The Xcaliber triggers really do  offer an insane amount of precision and reduce the play of the standard PS4 trigger by leaps an bounds. You can get into Call of Duty and adjust the triggers accordingly to have a hair-trigger setting that cuts your reaction time, thus giving you a huge advantage while playing. I’m not the best player and my age is beginning to catch up with me in regards to reaction time, but the Xcaliber triggers really did help mitigate a lot of that. If you are a serious FPS gamer on the PS4 these triggers have the potential to really give you a major edge online.

Another new feature is the additional screw hole that allows you to negate unwanted trigger travel. You can now tighten this secondary screw to reduce the play that the stock PS4 controller has. Once adjusted to your desired setting you’ll be really surprised at just how much play the stock controller really had. After playing with the triggers in place I suggest using another stock controller to really feel the difference. TriggerKing claims that you can gain a 2x advantage over your opponents with these little things installed, and while that’s a hard variable to quantify there is a definite improvement that can be seen and felt.

If you love your PlayStation 4 and live for online play, then the Xcaliber PS4 triggers are essential tools to give you the edge you are looking for. In a console landscape where everyone has a equal footing thanks to a “one size fits all” controller you can finally get that little edge that makes the difference between the 1st and 4th place. If I had one suggestion it would be that TriggerKing offer up these little guys in various colors to better match your controller.
