Relax; it’s not what you think… yet.
Well, mistakes happen. And in the case of the GDC schedule, that’s what happened. The official schedule accidentally updated the schedule to include Microsoft’s talk on bringing Xbox Live functionality to mobile, PC, and, notably, Nintendo’s Switch.
Don’t get too excited, though. All this really means is that they plan on making the basic Xbox Live functions available to developers on non-Xbox hardware. Things like the friends list, chat, and so on. Some of this is already available in games like the Switch version of Minecraft, as a matter of fact. So no; no Xbox games.
That’s not to say that their games being playable on these platforms isn’t impossible, however; at least, in the future. Microsoft has more than made it known that their plans for the future seem to involve their planned game streaming service, Project xCloud. and, moreover, that just about every device that could run the client falls under those plans.
But the futures not set in stone yet. So, as much fun as it might be to imagine the possibilities, we’re stuck in the here and now. But there may be a time where you might not need dedicated Xbox hardware to play Xbox games. You know, assuming they can figure out the internet infrastructure problem that plagues large swathes of the US.
