Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #12

I’m quite surprised. This has been a very good week for comic books! It doesn’t feel like a lot of time since I read the last issue of Wrath of the Eternal Warrior, which is a good sign, and this one meets all my expectations. There is a bloody massacre coming and I’m all ready for it!

“Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #12 is a lot more than the sum of its parts.”

Taking notes of what we have so far on this story, I can mention the dysfunctional family, magic, action, suicide and now a big fight on the way. There is clearly a very good fantasy tale taking shape, maybe more slowly than what we may have expected at first, but it’s happening in glorious fashion.

Fast paced and with a good development on character’s feeling, Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #12 shows us a much softer side of evil himself, and in case you wondering, that demon doesn’t lose any of its essence during Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #12. I liken this monster to the first Koragg in the Power Rangers: Mystic Force, if any of you out there watch that show.

The script has more content this time, giving some pages to the development of this world’s mythology, giving us a much better understanding of it and its working. There’s a better use of drama and stronger impact overall, and some ideas are finally getting more polished and taking a better form. However, there’s a small exception that bothers me. Some may say this issue wasn’t the best time to introduce a character such as the Pale Herder, and I’m in that group for sure. I just feel it should have been handled differently.

Now, the panels throughout the book, just as with the script, are more dramatic than we have seen before. There are many striking images that show a large level of importance to the story, thanks to the angles employed, the framing, the coloring, and more. It’s hard to pick my favorite section or moment, and that’s a good thing as the book has a really strong showing.

Everything here just  looks bigger and better than what we’ve seen before without feeling cluttered or rushed. It all works somehow, because the the team behind the book really understood the policy of “quality over quantity”. I cannot find any art within the book that didn’t work or play its required part.

The same can be said with regards to the overall lettering and coloring found here. They all match very well, both using a clean and simple style, leaving the spotlight clearly on the art and the inking. As with Britannia #2 (a book I also reviewed this week), Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #12 is a lot more than the sum of its parts.

After so many cool single-panel-pages, it was a little disappointing to see the book change the direction they were going and use an extreme close-up with the final big panel. My issue with this really is a personal one, I guess, however, why would they miss that chance to have a foreground of Gilad’s eyes looking straight to the Pale Herder?

Either way, and personal taste aside, this was an issue meant to be enjoyed for what it is: the next chapter of this action filled, high-fantasy adventure. Depending on who reads this book, there may be some minor details that don’t go over too well, but Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #12 is a great issue as a whole!

“Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #12 weaves a fantastic story that’s backed by some really solid art.”
