Get ready for the Wii Shop Channel’s farewell tour.
All good things must come to an end. So, too, must the Wii Shop Channel.
Nintendo confirmed that the Wii Shop Channel Will be phased out over the next two years on their Japanese site. On March 27, 2018, users will no longer be able to add Wii Shop Points. On January 1. 2019, the service will be discontinued entirely.
So, if you want to download something, you’ve got 1 year to pay for it and 2 years to buy it. The Wii Shop Channel was a valuable learning experience for Nintendo, informing the structure of its successor, the eShop. It is sad to see it go. Especially sine this also affects the Wii component of the Wii U.
Granted, this won’t be much of a problem for those who fly the Jolly Roger. But without the Wii Shop Channel, the official side of the console will be just a little dimmer.
