November is the month when the console gaming industry moves to the next generation. One of the most anticipated devices coming out is the PS5. And while the console already has plenty of neat features going for it, like the Tempest Engine surround sound to an SSD that’ll get rid of loading screens, the hardware that really brings the PS5 into the next generation is its controller. Here’s why the DualSense is the true game-changer of the console.
Adaptive Triggers
To increase the player’s immersion into the game, the DualSense has what Sony calls “Adaptive Triggers.” Depending on the game you’re playing, the L2/R2 button can simulate some resistance to reflect a character’s action. For example, you will be able to feel the sensation of a bow being pulled or a gun getting jammed.
This complex PCB design requirement used net ties to establish the connection between its ground plane and planar inductor, granting the DualSense its unique spiral mechanism. With copper acting as a bridge, the circuit makes a spiral piece in the hardware turn, changing the modular trigger’s angle. The closer the trigger is to the outside button, the better the resistance.
Here’s a breakdown video from TronicsFix that’ll show you how the adaptive triggers function:
Haptic Feedback
The PS4 controller’s haptic feedback was nothing more than a glorified rumble feature. Inside each grip of the DualShock is a large motor with a half-moon-shaped weight capable of spinning at different speeds and for an infinite duration. This means that the controller can control the intensity and length of a rumble; but that’s it.
On the other hand, the PS5 controller uses highly programmable voice-coil actuators to control the vibrations. And they’re located all over the device, from the touchpad to the back of the handles. This allows the DualSense to concentrate the vibration onto specific locations around it. For example, Astro’s Playroom has a level where you open zippers. If you drag your finger down the touchpad, you will be able to feel every single notch.

Create Button
The DualSense no longer has a share button. Instead, that function has been replaced with a create button. In Sony’s user interface demo last October, the company shared most of its key uses.
For example, it’ll allow players to “create” 4K screenshots and clips with a push of a button. Then, from the same menu, you can share it with your party or social media channels. The posts will even have an automated warning for critical scenes that have been flagged as a spoiler by the developers.
Other notable features of the DualSense:
• Built-in mic
• Rechargeable battery
• USB-C port
The DualSense is a unique, immersive piece of hardware. In fact, when a multi-port game comes out, it’ll definitely be very tempting to buy it for the PS5 just to see how it utilizes the controller. As a separate purchase, the DualSense will cost $69.99, which is a justified price given all the next-generation features.
