After the runaway success of We Can Never Go Home #1, I was really nervous about issue number two. Sure, I was beyond excited to get my hands on it, but as is the way with this sort of medium, it’s often hard to keep the momentum going after having a stellar first issue. So, does We Can Never Go Home #2 continue the magic that we got in issue number one? Yes, it sure as hell does.
Issue two picks up and sees the stories main characters bailing from their homes after the situation that they got themselves into. The book does a marvelous job of recapping issue one without giving a page breakdown of events, instead choosing to devote the very early segments of the book to telling these past events while still moving the story forward. New readers will be able to pick up on the basics of what the hell is going on with… I was going to say heroes, but I’m not sure about what they are yet, and those that read book one won’t feel like they are treading old ground all that much.
That heroes bit is what is really grabbing me with this book. While book one set this duo up as a kind of anti-hero kind of team of weirdos, this time out they seem to be losing themselves to the madness of the story. No matter how crazy things get, how often you want to scream at the page, you have to remember that at the end of the day these two are just kids. While some of the choices they make may leave you scratching your head, if you were closer to their ages, odds are you’d be able to relate to the flurry of emotions that these two are going through.
It just shows the care, and the attention to detail that the writer is giving, especially with the age range that is being written. In issue number one we had a few intense moments, but this time the action is ramped up ten-fold. By the end of everything, our compatriots are amassing quite the body-count, one of which will leave the reader wondering if these two have gone too far with their unchecked powers and emotions. Still, the book feels a little slow on giving us details on the whole endgame thing. This is pretty great in my opinion, as it keeps the reader guessing and questioning everything they do, but more traditional comic book readers may feel the book is a tad bit drawn out.
We Can Never Go Home #2 is another fantastic entry into this new series that looks to push the boundaries on what a story about having powers can be. The artwork is once again excellent with its distinct style, and the writing is also on-point. You really can’t go wrong with having this book in your pull-list, and I can’t recommend it highly enough to fans that are looking for something really fun.
