Warhammer 40K: Boltgun – Forges Of Corruption DLC Review (PC)

Boltgun DLC

It’s been a little while since this DLC for the fantastic Warhammer 40K Boltgun, one of the most refreshing boomer shooters that has released in the past several years, dropped on Steam. We had this baby since release but because of the type of game, Forges Of Corruption took us a while to complete because it will put your shooter skills to the test. I’m still having nightmares of that last stage and trying to beat it, even on medium settings.

The Botgun base game was a delight for a lot of reasons. One of those was the open arena nature of the game the allowed to intense shooting while allowing you to play the way that suits you best. It also let players, especially those who are fans of the 40K universe, explore stages and see all the love and attention to detail that the team put into the game with a retro 90s shooter feel. With more linear shooters in the modern era, while they are very pretty, you are pretty much placed on a mine-cart and simply shifted forward. I am an old fart and want to explore and see the work put into these stages and Boltgun was made for that.

Because this is a DLC you can expect the same core gameplay that made Boltgun a huge hit and adding to it by going balls-out with terms of difficulty. Really hardcore players are making it through in around four or so hours while my old ass took about six to make it through the short, yet very fun experience. In fact, I think this time around I had more fun than the original because the pacing is solid and a great deal tighter than the original. The DLV essentially cuts out all the fluff and dead time that the base game had some issues with.

The new additions not only include a new world to battle on but with that comes with new enemies to rip and tear into pieces. The new Black Havok Legion is a real pain as they can launch missiles and because of the their small human form can do some real chip damage. And don’t get me started when insta-killing a load of fodder enemies and you run across one that will explode, something that becomes really annoying when you’re on a rampage. Hellbrutes are also new and make for impressive tanking enemies, while Terminators love to push and cause problems up close with their Lightnig Claw.

On top of the new enemies you’ll also get new weapons to add to y our arsenal that give you new fighting options. The new Multi-Melta (a variant on the original) is a lot of fun and great as getting you out of a sticky situation when dealing with hordes, especially in tight spaces. The other weapon is the Missile Launcher that give you another range weapon that has good damage allowing you more options when dealing with large bosses in the huge arena battles. The team have also included a new Horde mode that will really test your skills.

Forges Of Corruption is the best kind of DLC. It takes what players already know and love and cranks up the insanity by making everything bigger, better, and tighter. The arena fights are harder, the secrets are a lot more difficult to discover and encourage exploration, and the new world helps to mix up the style that we already know and love. If you have Boltgun and loved the experience this DLC is a no-brainer and needs to be picked up. I love when a great game continues to get love and support and developer Auroch Digital deserves the measly $6 this DLC costs. And if you don’t have Boltgun you can snag the base game and DLC for less than $20 and have a summer filled spreading the Emperor’s Light!

The Forges Of Corruption DLC for Warhammer 40K: Boltgun does everything a great DLC should do. It takes the best of the base game and makes it better by addressing some of the issues fans had with it while adding enough new things to make an already great game and makes it ever better. Oh, and the new navigation mode is a blessing for those that can get lost in some of the larger areas, especially for those gamers more used to the corridor shooters that move you along from set-piece to set-piece. All of this for a crazy low price of $6 and you have an essential DLC for an already fantastic game.

Final Score:

Rating: 4 out of 5.
