Been to Walmart recently?maybe coulldn’t find that thing you were looking for? If only you had a cold, sterile automated drone to show you the way to that which you sought. Well, that seems to be Walmart’s plan for their in-store drone service. From their patent:

If, for example, the user has requested navigation assistance to an item selected from a virtual shopping list on the mobile electronic device, the computing device can control the aerial drone to provide navigation assistance to guide the user to the location of the selected item,” states the patent application.

These drones also have the ability to be outfitted for specific jobs. Say, with screens to help indicate a path, or speakers to give audio directions. And while it’s easy to scoff (I sure will be, because I’m an ass), they could be incredibly helpful to the disabled.

That said, something about the plan inspires my misgivings. Maybe it’s the fact that these drones, held in air by high revolution sharp plastic rotors, will probably be at around eye height. Ah, who cares, I’m sure the pirate look will be back in style by the time their fleet rolls out.
