After months of speculation about who would join the cast of True Detective for its sophomore season, HBO has taken the unexpected route of…confirming a few names we’ve already heard. A few days ago Colin Farrell was confirmed as one of the three leads, now Vince Vaughn has come on board as the heavy. HitFix describes Vaughn’s character thusly:
…Vaughn has been cast as Frank Semyon, “a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.”
Also, Justin Lin (Fast and Furious, Fast and Furious 6) will direct the first two episodes, and series creator Nic Pizzolatto will once again write the entire season. I have a lot of faith in Pizzolatto when it comes to casting, and I think we should give him – and Vaughn – the benefit of the doubt. If you had just watched a double feature of Fool’s Gold and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, would you cast Matthew McConaughey as Rust Cohle? Pizzolatto knows something we don’t – namely, how to write True Detective – so consider me on board with this.
Thanks to Uproxx for the heads up.
