Veronica Mars Review

Veronica Mars the Movie is everything fans could want and more.

After a long 7 years after it’s cancellation, the television show “Veronica Mars” has finally made the leap from television to film thanks to the shows dedicated fans from around the world. This film managed to make history as it was financed almost solely by its fans through its Kickstarter fundraiser last year. 92,000 Veronica Mars fans helped raise $5 million on Kickstarter, a fundraising website for creative projects last April.

Veronica Mars was originally a television show which starred a young Kristen Bell that aired between 2004-2007 and has kept a loyal fan base since it’s cancellation. The movie starts off with a basic recap of who Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) is, what she accomplished during her days at Neptune High, to where she is now nine years later from where the tv show ended. Veronica managed to leave most of her legacy behind in Neptune and has begun to make a new name for herself as a lawyer in New York City. This is all put on hold of course as we soon discover that an old classmate and girlfriend of Logan Echoll’s (Jason Dohring) has been murdered. Veronica is called back into action as a private investigator in order to clear Logan’s name as the murderer, and once she’s back it’s almost as if she never left.

Director and creator Rob Thomas succeeds in making Veronica Mars the movie feel just like a matured version of the tv show. We still have the heavy narration throughout the movie which is more dominant in the beginning to help catch us up and lessens as the film carries on. Thomas manages to thread dark undertones throughout the film while simultaneously inputting references and jokes that help lighten the mood for the audience.

Fans will not be disappointed with this movie that they fought so hard for. Once Veronica is back in Neptune we see just about everybody from Veronica’s past and how they have changed (or not changed) in the past nine years since we last sa them. Veronica’s father (Enrico Colantoni) is still doing P.I work, Logan has joined the military, Wallace (Percy Daggs III) now works at Neptune High, Mac (Tina Majorino) is still as nerdy as ever and Dick (Ryan Hansen) is still, well, Dick.

Character dynamics in the film are just as strong as ever as well, especially between Veronica and her father Keith. With some great performances from Kristen Bell and Enrico Colantoni the two manage to pull off flawless father-daughter chemistry in some intense and pivotal scenes in the film.

Fans of Veronica Mars will be cheering throughout the movie as they see appearances of old characters and roaring with laughter at the inside jokes sprinkled in the film. Don’t be weary about going to see Veronica Mars if you haven’t seen the television show, it’ll just knock the excitement down a notch or two. While the premise and climax of the movie definitely is exciting, some of the jokes and cameos may go right over your head and you’ll be left wondering what people are laughing or cheering at. Dont worry though, there are still plenty of moments in the film that will have you laughing and jumping in your seats.

Veronica Mars premiered at SXSW in Austin, Tx to a crowd of roaring fans and reporters at the Paramount theater. You can catch Veronica Mars in the theater nearest you on March 14, 2014.
