Verizon Reportedly Hoping To Sell Tumblr

Tumblr

But the real question is, who would want it?

I’ve never been coy about my hatred for Tumblr. Aside from finding the most vocal part of its userbase obnoxious (and that’s me wearing kid gloves, there), I pretty much hate it as a service, too. I absolutely hate trying to find anything specific or from a certain time period on the platform. As such, I’ve never had a Tumblr account. And, possibly, never will.

Now, Yahoo bought Tumblr about way back when for a whopping $1.1 billion. Which, I’d argue, is more than it was ever worth to begin with, but nobody ever asks me my opinion on these things. Tumblr hemorrhaged money for the once prominent search engine provider, which never quite figured out how to monetize the damn thing. Yahoo was gobbled up by Oath, who later became Verizon Media Group. Who wound up with the exact same problem, because a platform filled with diaperfurs and other disgustingly open paraphiliacs is really hard to sell to advertisers.

So, late last year, they enacted a blanket porn ban on the platform. Nobody liked that. And it apparently was, in fact, a bad business decision for them, because rumors indicate that they seem to hope to sell it to, well, anyone. And they probably won’t be making $1.1 billion off it. According to one Tumblr employee, the first they and other employees heard of it was in a Wall Street Journal report.

In late 2017, the platform’s founder, David Karp, stepped down from the position he held on the platform.

Verizon refuses to comment on the situation, implying that their plans to sell Tumblr are “rumors”.
