Venom Writers Working On One Punch Man Movie For Sony

One Punch Man

Okay.

Per Variety, the writers for Venom (Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner) are working on a script for a One Punch Man film for Sony. Sony, naturally, wants another franchise in their stable, in case you were wondering why they plan on adapting Saitama’s hairless bug-slapping adventures for the silver screen.

One Punch Man was, naturally, a massive success for ONE, the creator of the original webmanga that the entire franchise is based on. The humor inherent to Saitama’s day-to-day life juxtaposed with his basically invincible superheroics is something that pretty much everyone loved. Including Bill Burr.

So I’ll be honest, here. I still haven’t bothered to watch Venom. But, uh, insanely overpowered hero characters require the proper touch from the writers involved with them (See: Superman’s wildly inconsistent history). In general, the core conceit of such a character isn’t a matter of giving a problem easily solved with a (flying) brick, but the opposite, in fact. You need a problem that isn’t easily solved by said brick; because once the rick is there, it does its thing, and the story is over, along with any narrative tension.

Shit, even the game adaptation realizes this about Saitama; when he shows up, the fight is functionally over. That’s what the timer is for.

I suppose what I’m trying to say is, I have absolutely no confidence in any of the writers Sony could possibly put on this. Aside from Alita, we have gotten nothing but horribly paced live-action anime adaptations in the West. And I’d argue live-action anime is only marginally better off in Japan (those Kenshin movies were good, but they’re the only ones I’ve ever seen that didn’t make me want to die from cringe). But who knows, maybe I’ll be surprised (pleasantly).
