Things seem to be heating up in the company that Mario built. A spokesman for the company that spoke with Japanese website IT Media, stated that the released reports on the Wii U halting production this year are false.
Speaking with regard to the Wii U, the Nintendo spokesman stated that,
“From the next quarter and thereafter as well, production is scheduled to continue.”
This statement contradicts the report we cited released by Nikkei, a well-respected media outlet and financial publication in Japan. It is unclear if this new statement from Nintendo is meant to placate developers and retailers, or if the Wii U will continue production until the home component of the Nintendo NX releases sometime in 2017.
As od December 2015 the Wii U has sold over 12.6 million, a paltry number from the 101.52 million units the original Wii sold a generation before. We expect to see Nintendo officially unveil the NX sometime this summer, probably sometime around E3.
