Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers doesn’t make a lot of sense when you sit an think about things. I remember playing the original Street Fighter II when the thing debuted in the arcades, so having another go in my 30s seems a bit weird.
That said the trailer that Capcom showed off during the Nintendo Direct stream showed off a little more of what we can expect from he title. Evil Ryu and Violent Ken are in the game for whatever that’s worth. In my opinion Capcom should have kept this style and when the Mortal Kombat Armageddon route and featured every character ever. Crazy? Quite probable. Awesome? Most definitely.
Aside from two new characters after 20-some years, we also get a Haduken mode that lets you toss fireballs using the Joycon controllers. It’s nothing more than a gimmick, but it looks cool enough in practice. Again, I would have done this mode with all the famous Street Fighter challenge stages. Hey, Capcom, I”m totally free to do some consulting work.
The last two big thing to note is the two vs one mode that looks all sorts on crazy and the ability to use the touchscreen to initiate your special attacks. Both are neat little things that look like a lot of fun. Still, at the end of the day its still Street Fighter II and I’m not sure I need a fifth copy of the game at home.
