Yo ho ho, it’s a live service game.
Chances are that you spent most of the last couple of years forgetting about Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones. But with the game launching on February 16th, it’s definitely going to pop into the news more and more.
It was also the subject of part of Ubisoft’s recent investors call. Notably, one analyst inquired as to whether or not Skull and Bones‘ $70 price tag could potentially limit the size of its playerbase. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot responded:
You will see that Skull and Bones is a full-fledged game. It’s a very big game and we feel that people will really see how vast and complete that game is. So it’s a really full triple-A, quadruple-A game that will deliver in the long run.
Yves Guillemot
This is probably an expected response from M. Guillemot. And I believe what he said, because boy did they spend an awful lot of money developing it (and that’s probably no longer an accurate figure). It’s also worth noting that, in addition to that $70 admission fee, S&B has all of the microtransactions you’d expect from a live-service game, including a battle pass, in-game store, and we mustn’t forget the premium currency.
Skull and Bones is one of Ubisoft’s two major releases for their 4th quarter, with the other being the incredibly well received Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Guillemot claims it has the potential to “establish itself as a new live experience over the long term.”
Skull and Bones currently has a pre-release beta running right now, with the full game launching on February 16th.
