In a bold move twitter has shut down two major twitter accounts from Deadspin and SBNation. It seems that the NFL (a not for profit organization) and other sports organizations have filled complaints to twitter against the media outlets for posting gifs of games/events during said games/events onto twitter. Both @Deadspin, and @SBNationGIF were suspended on Monday after the request.
The NFL (a not for profit organization) accused Twitter of violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act by hosting specific tweets that contained NFL (a not for profit organization) content on its service. The follow is part of the takedown notice filled by the NFL (a not for profit organization):
As you may be aware, the NFL owns and/or controls the worldwide rights to license intellectual property of the NFL and its Member Clubs, including, but not limited to, moving images and other audio/video content featuring NFL game action and/or other NFL programming (collectively, ‘NFL Content’), and the copyrights in and to the NFL Content,”
This isn’t the first time a media outlet has been dinged for copyrighted content. It’s becoming more and more difficult for news/media outlets in the sports field to cover events without posting anything not approved and curated by the sports organizations themselves.
Update: Deadspin has since had their account reinstated tweeting the following:
