Twitter Has Sued The Trump Administration Over Order To Unmask ‘Rogue’ Account

Twitter has not been having the best of times, what with being the most wretched hive of scum and villainy in the world of social media. But the service is taking some action, and it’s against the Trump administration of all people. Go big or go home, I suppose.

Twitter has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security and US Customs and Border Protection over the departments attempting to reveal the person(s) behind the @ALT_uscis Twitter account. An account they don’t seem to keen on.

This ‘rogue’ account as they call it, is one that is frequently critical of the immigration policy of the current administration. I’m not sure how this fares for a lot of other Twitter accounts as it does seem people use Twitter to yell at other people about stupid things. That and lots of trolling, because trolling is the new marketing.

The Trump administration going after Twitter users for saying bad things about them is a scary situation, and one that sets a pretty terrible precedent. I don’t really care what side or party is in power, going after and exposing people who don’t like you and what you do and say mean things about you is just a dick move that impacts everyone’s freedom.

Also, it’s a pretty SJW-like move to try and silence and call out people that don’t like what you like. Just saying. And hell, chances are high that this account (and many like it) are fake accounts simply meant to get under the skin of the current administration. So, I guess in that regard its working.

Below is a small excerpt from the filing:

Specifically, on March 14, 2017, they issued and delivered to Twitter an administrative summons (the “CBP Summons”) demanding that Twitter provide them records that would unmask, or likely lead to unmasking, the identity of the person(s) responsible for the @ALT_USCIS account.
