Turtle Rock, of Back 4 Blood Fame, Bought By Tencent

Tencent

Tencent’s buying spree continues.

Tencent just announced their acquisition of Turtle Rock, the devs known for Back 4 Blood. Which means that Tencent really wanted to end the year on an even number, because Turtle Rock is the 6th developer they’ve purchased this year.

Tencent and Turtle Rock confirmed the deal today via press release. According to the release, Turtle rock, as well as its parent company, Slamfire, Inc., will now be part of the Tencent family. The studio will remain operationally independent, as well. They also confirmed that this will not affect Back 4 Blood, which was published by WB Games.

We are all looking forward to joining the Tencent family of studios. Tencent’s outstanding partners, global reach, deep knowledge of gaming and unprecedented support will help us create the kinds of ambitious games we dream of, while allowing us to retain our autonomy and independent spirit.

Steve Goldstein, Turtle Rock president and general manager

We are huge fans of Turtle Rock’s games, especially their amazing approach to creating co-operative online games. We can’t wait to see what comes next, and we’re excited to be part of their future.

Eddie Chan, chief strategy officer, Tencent Games Global

Tencent started 2021 by buying Don’t Starve devs Klei Entertainment. They then bought Spec Ops developers Yager, followed by Sumo Digital, and Stunlock Studios. They also acquired Fatshark earlier this year. And that’s not taking into consideration the studios they’d already bought in years previous, such as Riot and Funcom.

Notably, however, this is their first acquisition since the Chinese government took a hardline moral stance on video games in their country.
