The critically acclaimed cyberpunk shooter Turbo Overkill has made its explosive debut on consoles, following its massive success on PC. With over 5,000 “Overwhelmingly Positive” Steam reviews and an impressive Metacritic score of 87. Surprisingly, the console release came without any prior announcement, catching fans off guard in the best way possible.

Developed by Trigger Happy Interactive and published by Apogee Entertainment, Turbo Overkill is a high-octane, retro-inspired FPS that puts players in the boots of Johnny Turbo, a chainsaw-legged anti-hero carving his way through a dystopian cyberpunk world. The game spans three action-packed episodes, taking players from the sprawling city of Paradise to slums, arenas, and even a rocket ride to an orbiting space station. Console players can expect enhanced visuals and buttery-smooth 60 FPS performance on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while Nintendo Switch owners can take the chaos on the go.

The brainchild of solo developer Sam Prebble from New Zealand, Turbo Overkill is a testament to his extraordinary talent. Prebble single-handedly crafted the game’s design, mechanics, textures, models, animations, and sprawling levels. His background at Wētā FX, the visual effects studio behind The Lord of the Rings and Avatar, shines through in the game’s intricate world-building and polished visuals.

Scott Miller, CEO of Apogee Entertainment, didn’t hold back his praise: “I’ve worked with some of the best in the industry, from the founders of Id Software to the minds behind Duke Nukem 3D, but Sam is in a league of his own. He built Turbo Overkill almost entirely on his own, and the result is nothing short of incredible.”

The game also boasts an all-star voice cast, including Patricia Summersett (The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom) as a key boss and the rogue A.I. Syn, Gianni Matragrano (Ultrakill, Neon White) as the bounty hunter Maw, and Jon St. John (Duke Nukem) as Johnny’s A.I. companion, SAMM.

Porting studio Black Sheep Studio ensured the console versions lived up to the high standards set by the PC release. The result? Upgraded visuals, improved performance, and a seamless experience that stays true to the game’s retro-meets-modern FPS roots. A new “Enhanced Visuals” mode will also be added to the PC version alongside the console launch.

In addition to the Standard Edition, a Digital Deluxe Edition will launch in March, featuring a 140-page digital artbook, gameplay insights, and a 35-minute soundtrack sampler. Players who purchase the Standard Edition can upgrade to the Deluxe Edition for $4.99.

Turbo Overkill is available now for $19.99 on your favorite console. Gear up, rev your chainsaw leg, and get ready to clean up Paradise in style!
