Transformers: Robots in Disguise “Battlegrounds, Part 1”

Well, the season of Transformers: Robots in Disguise is nearing its end. There’s only one more episode after this. Two part finale time!

Sideswipe and Strongarm are playing tag in the woods. No, I’m not making that up. Strongarm keeps catching Sideswipe, which is driving him nuts. So he decides to really run through the woods, and Strongarm soon manages to really catch up with him. Too bad a bunch of Steeljaw’s pack caught him. And then chase her through the woods. She manages to alert Bumblebee, but they catch her anyway since they outnumber her.

In the Realm of the Primes, Optimus is still training under Micronus. Micronus is still not impressed with his progress. Suddenly, the sky darkens and Micronus has his “oh shit” moment. He’s run out of time, and realizes that he needs to take Optimus to meet with the other Primes.

His training is officially OVER -- FINISHED!

Bee gets Strongarm’s distress call, but they don’t have any opportunity to react before she’s flat out captured. On orders, Fixit looks for somewhere large enough to house the Decepticon army Steeljaw craves, eventually landing on an automated abandoned steel mill. Bee tells Denny and Russell to stay behind; with the defense system in place, the junkyard is the safest place for them. Denny tries to protest, but then Windblade shows up for no discernible reason, and offers to help scout for them. Bumblebee culminates this season’s battle cry jokes by using the Rescue Bots cry before realizing it’s already taken.

Steeljaw and co. have been amassing a bunch of electronic crap for Megatronus. Steeljaw’s unusually pleased with them for having managed to actually capture two Autobots, on top of getting more of the crap they need. Steeljaw doesn’t care about what Megatronus wants; he just wants to get this whole deal done with so he can rule the world. Megatronus’ ears must’ve been burning, because he makes contact to find out how the plan is going. He’s not happy with their progress, and almost makes Clampdown rip off his own arm to prove a point. Hell or high water he wants his arch. Steeljaw sends Fracture to go spring the other Decepticons on the reasoning that the junkyard is likely unprotected, while he and the others get to work on the arch at a place with enough metal to anchor the energies necessary; the Crown City Colossus.

Back with Optimus, the Primes are pretty disappointed with his progress. They clearly expected Micronus to get shit done. Optimus argues that being prepared is not as important as acting when lives are at stake. Micronus explains to him that for him to be ready for this task, the Primes have to share a significant portion of their sparks with him, an if he’s not prepared for that it will destroy him. Optimus tells them to do it anyway; after all, it’s better to FIGHT AND DIE than sit around with the knowledge that he could’ve done something.

Windblade is scouting out the steel mill when her senses fail to inform her that a steel girder is sailing towards her. It connects and brings her DOWN TO EARTH (okay, okay, I’ll stop). Steeljaw commends Underbite for the throw that netted them another Autobot. Underbite laments the waste of the girder.

Here lies Windblade's sueishness. 'Twas the senses on par with those of newspaper Spider-Man that did it in.

Hank shows up to give Russell a Bronco Kowalski card that she found. Denny tells him to get her to leave since there’s no telling who could show up to break into the place. He reaches down to get the card from on top of the fence with some load about why they can’t play, and she leaves. Unfortunately, Fracture was watching, and has realized the weak point in the defenses: human error.

You know how this song and dance goes.

Fracture makes his demands; as long as Denny hands Fixit over to him, Russell will remain unharmed. Fixit manages to free Russell with a lucky shot, but his blaster gets destroyed in the process. The three of them go hide in the diner, grabbing anything they can use as a weapon. None of them notices the flash from outside, and they run out to find…

Oh, Sorry. Were those yours? My bad.

Optimus recognizes them, oddly enough. They tell him that Bumblebee is off trying to stop Steeljaw. Russell convinces him to take them with, to help convince people to evacuate the area if nothing else.

Bumblebee, Grimlock and Drift have been scouting out the Colossus, having tracked Steeljaw there. Bumblebee tells Grimlock to swim there so that he won’t be seen; Meanwhile, he and Drift set out over the roadway. and then the best thing ever happens. Clampdown notices them on the bridge, and Steeljaw tells him to ignore them as they’re just human motorists… before he double takes and realizes that Clampdown was right!

Making this one of the few times the whole "in disguise" thing has actually worked. Almost.

Steeljaw has the rest of his pack deal with them while he works on the arch. The fight is pretty good here, and Drift gets horribly mismatched against Underbite. Grimlock rises from the briny deep, and Bee tells him to destroy the arch. Too bad Clampdown gets him in the tail and won’t let him go. The arch activates, and all seems lost as Megatronus starts walking through.

He can fly. Just accept it.
He can fly. Just accept it.

Then Optimus shows up. He smashes the arch causing everyone to be temporarily blinded by the flash. But…

Hello. Like my kitty ears?
Hello. Like my kitty ears?

Final Thoughts:

  • The Primes probably should be upset considering how much time Micronus probably wasted with unnecessary bullshit riddles.
  • Steve Blum is just never there when Bumblebee needs him.
  • I seriously lost my shit with that double take.
