“Do a kick-flip!”
Tony Hawk Pro Skater was a god damn lifestyle back in the day. Skateboarding was the be-all-end-all and you couldn’t go outside without seeing dozens of kids pulling kick-flips on their way to the local skate shop for new trucks and tape.
The Pro Skater series help bring this culture to the forefront and made being a skater cool and trendy. I can still remember getting catalogs in the mail for new decks, shoes, and all sorts of accessories.
The moment I knew it had taken over the world was when my dad came home with some signed decks and boxes of DC shoes because he picked up a tax client who was “some really nice skateboard kid” as he put it. This shit was everywhere.
And the music! Oh, god, the music. I know so many people who were opened up to the bands of their youth because they played Tony Hawk Pro Skater. And before we realized how good we had it, how many skaters we turned into honest-to-god celebrities, it all fell apart.
The Tony Hawk series kicked all this off, and in a sad stroke of luck, ended up killing it as well. But now we can go back an experience the magic once again that to the upcoming Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 Collection.
Both games are being remastered to take advantage of 4K graphics, new and updated frame-rates, and some sweet online capabilities. And that new multiplayer is also tied to the Create-A-Park mode, letting users share their parks online with others.
“It was incredible to play the original games on PlayStation back in 1999 and to see the overwhelming response from the PlayStation community, so I’m excited to bring the game back to all the hardcore THPS fans on PlayStation again this year,” Hawk said in a statement.
The game launches Sept. 4 globally via the PlayStation Store for $40, with a digital deluxe bundle setting you back $50.
