Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony Blasts Some Sweet Video Game Music

Tokyo Oympics

It’s not the Akira reference I was hoping for, but I’ll take it.

So I regularly avoid the Olympics. I take a fair bit of pride in basically seeing next to none of the games. I may have messed up with this year’s… last years? Tokyo Olympics, though.

The opening ceremony went without a hitch. But the interesting thing was when they started the procession of each nation’s athletes, as usual starting with Greece as the originators of the games. Because the procession was scored with Game music. And it’s lamentable that I can’t find a full video of it online, or I’d drop it here. But yes, this really happened.

And so on. In all, 19 themes from various games were played, with a shockingly large number of them from JRPGs. Though, naturally, they led with Roto’s Theme/Dragon Quest March; I mean, it is Japan. The full list:

  • Dragon Quest: ‘Roto’s Theme’
  • Final Fantasy: ‘Victory Fanfare’
  • Tales of Zestiria: ‘Sorey’s Theme The Shepherd’
  • Monster Hunter: ‘Proof of Hero’
  • Kingdom Hearts: ‘Olympus Coliseum’
  • Chrono Trigger: ‘Frog Theme’
  • Ace Combat: ‘First Flight’
  • Tales of Graces: ‘Royal Capital Majestic Grandeur (Pomp And Majesty)’
  • Monster Hunter: ‘Wind of Departure’
  • Chrono Trigger: ‘Robo’s Theme’
  • Sonic the Hedgehog: ‘Star Light Zone’
  • Winning Eleven: ‘eFootball walk-on theme’
  • Final Fantasy: ‘Main theme’
  • Phantasy Star Universe: ‘Guardians’
  • Kingdom Hearts: ‘Hero’s Fanfare’
  • Gradius: ’01 ACT 1-1′
  • NieR: ‘Song of the Ancients’
  • Saga Series: ‘The Minstrel’s Refrain: SaGa Series Medley 2016’
  • Soul Calibur: ‘The Brave New Stage of History’

Yeah, I probably wouldn’t have imagined that I’d hear Sonic or Monster Hunter music at the Olympics. Like, ever. It is, however, surprising to see Sonic music there, but nothing from the Mario series (or Nintendo in general). Especially when you consider that Mario & Sonic at The Olympic Games has been a thing going back to the late 2000’s.
