Those old-ass smurf children probably won’t be happy.
Marvel Studios has convinced Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to come back for another run at the franchise. Which isn’t exactly a surprise; aside from being the most successful of Thor’s solo movie run, it’s also the most enjoyable. So it’s natural to see why they’d want him back for the next one.
There is, potentially, one casualty, though; Akira. Waititi was working on the Warner Bros. live-action adaptation of the anime film classic, which has spent over a decade in development hell before he was attached to it. Waititi had even been testing actors for potential roles up until just recently. The problem lies in the projected release dates; Akira was slated for an April 2021 release. Which, with Thor 4 now in the way, seems a bit more unlikely. Akira also suffered from a number of script problems which have pushed that date further back, unfortunately right into the probable production window for Thor 4.
That said, Warner Bros. is hoping to retain Waititi for Akira. That likely means that Akira‘s going to be shelved until Thor 4 is done. Eh, what’s a few more years?
