The Windows 10 October Update Apparently Deletes Files

Windows 10

“No, my 20 year old illegal mp3’s! How will I listen to Superman in the worst quality possible now!”

Microsoft’s October Windows 10 update apparently comes with a nasty little surprise for some users. For some, the update actually deletes files in the Documents folder. In one case, from Microsoft’s support forum:

I have just updated my windows using the October update (10, version 1809) it deleted all my files of 23 years in amount of 220gb. This is unbelievable, I have been using Microsoft products since 1995 and nothing like that ever happened to me.

Files were located at C:/Users/rober/Documents/This location is still present, with no files. All of files deleted.

I am extremely upset. Not sure what to do….please let me know.

Robert

Robert’s not the only one, either. Not only did other users chime in with there accounts on Robert’s thread, there is a burgeoning thread on Reddit filled with similar accounts.

Microsoft’s suggestion of rolling back the update doesn’t seem to work, however. Those files are apparently gone. The cause of this bug is unknown. But it has apparently been present in other preview builds in the Windows Insider program.

As for what users can do, It might be wise to search for a specifically-named file among those potentially deleted. It could be possible that those files were moved to a generic  “windows.old” file somewhere in your C drive (it may be hidden, too, so check for that)*. Aside from that, it may be wise to, in the future, back up files in your Documents folder regularly, and store them on a detachable drive.
