The Sony PS5 has been revealed alongside a ton of AAA titles

The PS5 sure has an interesting design

It seems both Microsoft and Sony see their new consoles as semi art installations. The newly reveled PS5 looks like a flower vase from the Mass Effect universe. Sure it’s pretty as all hell but I’m already dreading figuring out where this thing will go in my entertainment center.

There will be two versions of the consoles at launch a PlayStation 5 console with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition without a disc drive as consoles push towards that all digital frontier.

There are a lot of the basic extras with headsets, controllers and the like. Sony also featured a media remote that feel odd considering this generation pretty much did away with them since a, you know, controller already comes with the system.

The strangest thing of note is the HD camera that you can pick up. One assumes this will work alongside video conferencing and an update to PSVR if that gets announced. My concern is the white shell which I can already see getting dirty and not aging well.

But what about the games! Well, Sony brought some of the heavy hitters that looked fine. Nothing here just yet to get me into the early adopter group but enough to get fans excited. The most notable game has to be Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Considering that Spider-Man was one of the most fun experiences on the PS4, kicking off with a new entry only makes sense as a system seller.

One of the more exciting reveals was the trailer for the next entry into the Resident Evil series. Resident Evil Village didn’t show off a lot but it looks about as creepy as one would expect. All I can think of is that terrible Shayamalan film.

This one feels more traditional than the last entry and reminds me, at least stylistically of RE4. It does at least seem to continue Ethan’s story and Chris looks like a total asshole now (and like he’s been on a diet since RE5) so who knows what’s in store.

Grand Turismo 7 was also on display but I feel that the series has lost a lot of the magic that it once held ever since Forza came onto the seen and kept releasing games while Polyphony Digital was tinkering away.

New additions, at least to me, are a campaign mode that should make the title more appealing to new players who aren’t versed in the series. It’s also a great hook to get people racing especially with the robust online the series features.

Demon’s Souls is also heading to PS5 in a remastered form. I wasn’t a fan of the original and it hasn’t aged all that well considering all that has come after but people have been asking for this one and being a PS5 exclusive means an established fan-base that might jump on that PS5 bandwagon.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is also launching with the console which a lot of people feel is strange. It’s actually anything but, even if Rockstar Games were giving the title away fro free recently. It’s all about GTA Online and the money it’s brining in.

People have invested hundreds of hours and millions of real-world dollars into GTA Online and Rockstar wants the gravy train rolling as long as possible.

Something old-school PlayStation fans will get a kick out of was the announcement of a new Ratchet and Clank game with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. There looks to be a lot of dimension hopping adventures to be had.

The big reveal in the trailer is that Ratchet gets replaced with a new female wombat who looks pretty neat. Should be a nice way to mix things up and maybe see alternate versions of some series staples. It might not be the visual stunner, but if the gameplay is fun that’s not a big deal in my book.

Pseudo PS3-era mascot Sackboy is also making return in Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Taking the Little Big Planet look and feel and turning it into a more traditional platformer feels right if a bit more Nintendo’s fare.

Something I love about Sony is that unlike Microsoft they aren’t afraid to be appealing to everyone in the family, something that makes sense as a PS5 is going to be an investment.

I’m super excited about Horizon: Forbidden West considering Horizon: Zero Dawn was a fantastic new IP from Sony, something we don’t see from any of the big console makers. It’s a risk that paid off and a fantastic way to kick off the PS5.

A bigger and deeper Horizon is something that I can get behind. I’m invested in this character and her ongoing journey. This and Spider-Man are the only games on my must-have list. I better start saving some money!

Stray is an interesting looking title that I feels has cult-classic written all over it. You look to play as a stray cat in a world where only robots have survived. There isn’t a lot to go on from the trailer but I love weird games so I’m going to keep an eye on this one.

Another game that looks interesting is Returnal. A science-fiction game where you play as an astronaut who crashed on a planet and dies only to be reborn and experience it all over again. The trick is that with each death the world you crashed on keeps changing.

But the weirdest trailer has to be for Godfall that’s being published by Gearbox. I have no idea what is happening other than you are in this futuristic medieval setting killing bosses and upgrading your armor and getting new weapons.

I hope that this isn’t just Dark Souls for the cool kids. The choice of music is also atrocious and does nothing for the game other than making it feel like it’s being advertised to all the bros in the audience. Weird.

That’s just a few of the bigger games I took note of during the presentation but there were a lot more announced that you can check out below:
