The PS5 Has Been Jailbroken

PS5

“It’s a totally reversible process!”

Good news, everyone! The PS5 has been jailbroken! Mods are asleep, install P.T.!

But seriously, PlayStation modder SpecterDev managed to do it via an experimental IPV6 kernel exploit for the PS5. Grandted, the jailbreak relies on a WebKit vulnerability for entry, and it only works on PS5’s running firmware 4.03 (i.e. old) or lower. And even then, it only has a 30% success rate. But the point is, it’s possible.

Fellow modder Lance MacDonald showcased it by installing P.T., the Silent Hill game demo that never was (because Konami is apparently run by people that hate money).

And, just in case you needed more confirmation, Modern Vintage Gamer has also jailbroken a PS5 using this method:

The jailbreak gives users full access to the backend, which also allows the installation of any PS4 PKG file (basically, backups), hence all the P.T. around here. That said, the game won’t run, either; you can read and write data, but there’s currently no way to execute it. In short, you can install it, but can’t run it.

While Sony’s probably not happy about it, they’re probably not going to come down too hard on this, due to all of the limiting factors that keep it from being widespread. After all, it requires the 4.03 firmware; for point of reference, the current version is apparently 22.02-06.00.00 (I don’t know why they complicate this). SpecterDev says it should be possible on lower firmware versions, but that it might need to be tweaked a little bit. And it goes without saying, but homebrew isn’t currently a possibility.

That said, it’s a step forward for the modding community. And will probably be important when it comes to games preservation in the future. That said, you might want to wait a little while for things to get a bit nicer; it does, after all, void your warranty and can get your PSN account banned..
