It’s been a while.
There apparently hasn’t been a Mac Pro on the market in some time. Things stood with the “trashcan” as the previos model was dubbed by fans. Well, at WWD, Apple announced a new Mac Pro; the cheese grater v2. So called due to the machine’s stainless steel frame.
Under the hood, it packs the following:
- A Motherboard capable of supporting up to 1.5TB of 2933MHz ECC RAM in 12 DIMM slots, 8PCIe slots, 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, 2 USB-A ports, 2 10 GB Ethernet ports, and a 3.5mm audio port.
- an 8th gen Xeon processor capable of supporting up to 28 cores
- Support for 2 MPX modules as GPU; each module allows the combination of 2 graphics cards for the total capability of running 4 cards
- An Afterburner video decoder card
- A 1,400 watt power supply
To round out the package is the display; a 32-inch 6016 by 3384 6K retina display which comes with a glossy or matte glass cover. And, yes, it matches the case. It’s based around providing a comparable experience to a $40,000 reference monitor at a far more affordable price, and has been dubbed the Pro Display XDR.
But, hey, the price for such a workstation is worthy of note. The Pro Display XDR is going to run you $5000 by itself. The cheapest version of the Mac Pro, on the other hand, runs $6000. That version comes with an 8-core Xeon processor, AMD Radeon Pro 580, 16GB of RAM, and 225GB SSD.
