The Last Blockbuster Gets Its Own Beer

Blockbuster

From the dawn of time it came, moving silently down through the centuries.

Mostly consigned to the mists of time, only one Blockbuster Video store remains. Located in Bend, Oregon, it stands obstinate against the oppressive weight of modern video platforms. And now, it has its own, titular, beer.

he beer is being made by Oregon-based 10 Barrel Brewing, and is based off of their S1nist0r Black Ale, a schwarzbier. With hints of red licorice, natch. The official description:

Remember how excited you would get when the latest blockbuster was released on DVD and you’d head to your local Blockbuster, hoping they’d have a copy left for you? Those days have come and gone but, as you may have seen, there is only one remaining Blockbuster located right here in Bend, where you can relive your movie renting experience.

To keep the experience alive, 10 Barrel teamed up with the Blockbuster team to create an exclusive Blockbuster beer! The “official” Blockbuster beer – The Last Blockbuster – pairs perfectly with buttery theater popcorn and your favorite movie-sized chocolate with a light body, smooth finish and hints of nostalgia.

The beer will see a launch at The Last Blockbuster’s “Block Party to End All Block(buster) Parties”; the party will not only launch the beer, bet celebrate the three decades of operation the store itself has enjoyed. Coincidentally, there is a poll to determine what film will air at the party; Strange Brew is in the lead, with Hocus Pocus at a close second.

If you can’t make it to Bend for the party, you can still try the beer. It’ll be available for a limited time at one of 10 Barrel Brewing’s six brewpub locations in Oregon, California, Colorado and Idaho. And even then, that’s not the end of the celebration; filmmakers Taylor Morden and Zeke Kamm are working on a documentary named The Last Blockbuster, which looks into the chain’s history, as well as the particular store everyone’s abuzz over.

Wow, what a difference.
