The Flash “Invincible”

The Flash - Invincible-0

The Flash is nearing it’s season finale. Which means that they have to have that episode that raises the stakes to a certain degree before that. This is that episode, and I really wish my cable hadn’t decided that it was a great idea to stutter like Porky Pig.

Zoom, for some reason, just let Caitlin leave; according to her, that is. She doesn’t mention that it was part of an ultimatum, so I’m left wondering whether it’s related to the deal he gave her last episode. She is surprised to find Barry alive and well, though; Zoom had told her he was dead. She spends most of the episode in shock from her time as Zoom’s prisoner, and only really begins to see a way out of that state after a little caper with Cisco. Said caper being impersonating their Earth-2 counterparts to stop Laurel Lance’s doppelganger.

The Flash - Invincible-1
It works until they find out Earth-2 people are literally mirrored, as in predominantly left-handed.

Jessie actually gets Caitlin to check her for metahuman capabilities, even though Harry ~knows~ it’s impossible. She hasn’t developed any powers, but we know they didn’t show her and Wally getting hit by the wave for nothing. Speaking of, Wally’s taken to low level vigilantism to justify his being saved by The Flash. Joe takes a pretty dim view of these actions, namely due to the fact that they’re very likely going to get Wally killed at some point. That being said, he does save Barry from Black Siren with his car.

The Flash - Invincible-2
He caught her monologuing, that sly dog.

The reason Joe was so worried wasn’t unfounded, though. Zoom literally unleashed every metahuman he had under his command on Central City. It’s a bloodbath on the streets, which is why it’s a good thing Barry got his powers back. Even Zoom knows that he’s back, And deliberately has Black Siren take out specific buildings, like Mercury Labs, to keep him busy. Notably, that save reveals that Dr. McGee has figured out that Barry is The Flash. Zoom knows that Barry can’t just let a building fall or allow someone to get hurt, and tells him so during their little face to face. Which was orchestrated around yet another building collapsing to really hammer the point home.

They know, thanks to this, that they need to get all of the metahumans under control ASAP. Their usual modus operandi isn’t going to cut it, though; it would take them months to figure out the best way to go after each individual meta. So Cisco and Wells cook up a plan to use a high power frequency generator to render all of them unconscious simultaneously, using Barry to create a barrier to bounce the sound off of and ensure the Earth-2 metahumans get saturated. A plan which only works because of the fact that Earth-2 people match up to a different vibrational frequency than Earth-1 people. This does force Cisco and Caitlin to go on their little adventure above, though. Also, Zoom gets away, because of course he does.

The Flash - Invincible-3
I see we’re not bothering with the rules set for this.

One problem does arise, though. Jessie’s protective headphones malfunction. Harry is exactly the sort to do anything for his daughter, though, and whips off his own to give them to her, knocking himself out. My guess? This will leave him mostly incapacitated for a sizeable portion of the finale.

One of the biggest things on this episode, though was Barry’s unbridled optimism. He’s certain they’ll win thanks to his time in the Speed Force. This obviously worries everyone, and they all take an opportunity to remind him that he is not, in fact, invincible (title drop). Even so, he throws caution to the wind repeatedly, like that hasn’t hurt him before. This meshes well with Cisco’s recurring visions of birds dying, but I’ll get back to that.

With all the metahumans mopped up, everybody heads to Joe’s for a victory dinner. Henry and Dr. McGee had been making eyes at each other all episode, and at least Iris noticed. Barry asks her if they might give a relationship between them a try. Just then, Cisco figures out that his visions are pointing to a catastrophic event caused by Earth-2 slicing its way into Earth-1. Then Zoom shows up and kidnaps Henry, and Barry accidentally reveals to Wally that he’s The Flash by chasing them. They wind up at Barry’s old house…

The Flash - Invincible-4
Yeah, should’ve stayed in the cabin, Henry.

The Flash’s second season finale is shaping up. We’re promised a race between the two of them. I can’t fathom why, though; if I were Barry, I’d want to straight up murder that fucker.

Final Thoughts:

  • Personally, I would’ve doubled down on the lie by saying I was cross-dominant.
  • I would’ve expected Cisco to know that Beats by Dre are actually really shitty headphones.
  • I swear, I’m going to lose it if we don’t find out who the man in the iron mask is.
