I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune film is soldiering on, despite the pandemic. And, per Vanity Fair, we’ve just gotten the first look at Timothée Chalamet as the title’s protagonist, Paul Atreides. The image shows Paul as he’s about to leave his home planet, Caladan, for Arrakis. And, as those familiar with the series can tell you, the two planets could not be any more different.
But Paul is not a typical hero. Per Chalamet on the character:
The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts.
He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that.
Chalamet is joined onscreen by Oscar Isaacs (Duke Leto), Rebecca Ferguson (Lady Jessica), Josh Brolin (Gurney Halleck), Stellan Skarsgård (Baron Harkonnen), Javier Bardem (Stilgar) and Zendaya (Chani).
Notably, Dune is among the few blockbusters to not have it’s release date pushed back from its announced December 18th. Says Villeneuve of the film:
Dune was made by people from all over the world. Many of these people are like family to me, and they’re very much in my thoughts. I’m so proud to showcase their hard work. I look forward to a time when we can all get together again as Dune was made to be seen on the big screen.
