The DeLorean Returns As An Electric Sports Car

DeLorean

It better hit 88 miles per hour, all I’m sayin’.

Despite ostensibly being a failure tied to the tarnishing of its namesake (though not anywhere near as much as the whole cocaine thing), the DeLorean managed to rise from the ashes and become one of the iconic cars of the 80’s. Mostly thanks to the Back to the Future trilogy, which featured the stainless-steel bodied and gull wing door… -ed car as the basis for a time machine.

And so, while many surviving DeLoreans were lovingly restored and kept as best as possible (parts were a difficulty for a long time), just as many if not more were modified to look like the car from the movie. A key thing to note was that a Liverpool-born mechanic named Stephen Wynne founded a new DeLorean Motor Company in 1995 located in Humble, Texas, having managed to acquire the remaining parts stock for the now-iconic DMC-12 (the actual model name of the car, even though everyone just calls it a DeLorean). Over the years, there were overtures made towards restarting production of parts and even full cars, but nothing big really seemed to materialize.

Until now.

Ahead of the Super Bowl, DeLorean announced their return. But while this new car seems to have many of the inseparable features of the 80’s car (gull wing doors, natch) as well as a similar profile, this new DeLorean has some modern sensibilities in mind. In particular, the reveal tweet, which doesn’t give you an unobscured look at the car, drops that it will be a luxury car, true, but also an electric vehicle.

And they’re going for it. The company is opening a new headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, which is bringing 450 jobs to the area according to Mayor Ron Nirenberg. The plan is for the new car to launch this year.

There had been rumors that DeLorean would go electric for a while now. And, if I’m being honest, if I were to pony up the cash for an electric vehicle, I’d definitely want it to have that DeLorean style and cred. I’m probably not the only one, either. There was a mockup made by by Italdesign last year in celebration of the car’s 40th anniversary, and they’re far from the only ones to do so. But there’s no telling at this point how close any of these mockups were.

Still, it’s nice to dream, isn’t it? Especially as we’re still a ways off from getting a good look at this new car.
