The Apple Car Project, 2014-2024

Legends say that playing music that wasn’t bought through Apple’s official channels would void the warranty.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Apple Car Project is dead. Apple broke the news of the project’s cancelation to the roughly 2000 employees working on it Tuesday.

Many of these employees will be moved to other divisions and projects within the company, the bulk of which will likely go to Apple’s generative AI efforts. Of course, a sizeable number of these team members were specialists that were engineers and car designers; while some will be able to apply to other positions within the company, the majority are likely going to be laid off.

Apple kept this project, codenamed Project Titan, relatively low-key. While there were occasional leaks, Apple never officially announced the project. The original plan was to create a fully self-driving car, one without pedals or a steering wheel, with a remote command center ready to take over should anything go awry. Those lofty goals were eventually tuned down, with later years of the project being more akin to an electric vehicle like a Tesla, with reports as recent as last month claiming a 2028 release.

The project also went through numerous changes in leadership over its decade of development. After the departure of Doug Field for Ford, Apple instated Kevin Lynch to head up the project.

Apple had been considering a $100,000 price tag for their vehicle, putting it in range of the higher-end Tesla models. Apple executives were worried about the profit margin at that price, though (how very Apple of them). This cancelation is, according to Bloomberg, a rare setback for Apple, which had been claimed to be working on “powertrains, self-driving hardware and software, car interiors and exteriors, and other key components” over the lifetime of the project.
