They probably have the money to do so.
Tencent seems to be gearing up to take their WeGame platform international. According to the South China Morning Post, the storfront/ social platform will launch this international version in Hong Kong. A spokesperson speaking to the Post had this to say:
The Hong Kong version of WeGame is now under development. This version will be available for overseas users, and we will use this platform to bring more Chinese games to the global market.
WeGame currently has around 220 titles on tap. And that isn’t limited to games made in China; the likes of Don’t Starve Together, Subnautica, and Monster Hunter World (judging by their site) are there, and presumably more.
While WeGame is big in China (because, duh, it’s China we’re talking about), it may face an uphill battle in the West. Steam and GOG have most of the online PC market on lockdown, with a handful of comparatively lightweight contenders surrounding. If they’re to carve a niche, they’ll probably need exclusives, as well as being super dev friendly. But I suppose we’ll see their strategy soon enough. The international version of WeGame doesn’t have a release date yet, though. So keep your ear to the ground.
