Ubisoft and Tencent are in talks to create a new venture together
Ubisoft has not been doing well in recent years. Maybe it’s because the treat Assassin’s Creed like Madden with little to no improvement or downtime for fans to catch their breaths. Or maybe it’s because every game they release is nothing more than a “find the next tower” simulator with a different coat of paint. It might even be because they seem to hate their fans and kill off games that people paid for so they can no longer ever play them again.
If a deal does come together, it looks like Tencent would be a fair amount of control over a number of Ubisoft properties and hopefully help Ubisoft make better games, The deal would also allow Tencent to get a better foothold outside of their native China. And considering that the Biden administration has blacklisted Tencet be because of its ties to the Chinese military, the Ubisoft name might go a long way to help ease that issue.
Ubisoft is looking for a bump and CEO Yves Guillemot spoke on a recent conference call stating that he sees “several potential paths” for its franchises that would help maximize shareholder value. Gotta love that corporate speak that treats gamers like giant pockets that they can dip their hands into!
We don’t know what the deal between Tencent and Ubisoft will look like if it does happen, but it’s been reported before that Ubisoft was considering a number of options to turn its fortunes around. This even includes selling itself off to Tencent wholesale.
News of this potential partnership sent Ubisoft shares rising this morning, so the market seems to want this to happen. This is coming of the backs on months of declines on the market for Ubisoft, especially after delaying their next big Assassin’s Creed release.
