Teen Titans Go! is one of my favorite things going on within the grander DC universe. I know a lot of people have issues with the show, but I’m of the mindset that comics should be fun, silly, colorful, and just plain entertaining. So going into the comic version of the series I excited to see how the humor of the show translates over to the printed/digital page.
Raven and Cyborg create a pair of spooky-looking leggings from a pattern in one of Raven’s arcane books. But Robin’s in for quite the fright when he tries on these “Scaredy Pants”!
Teen Titans Go! Chapter 29 sees Cyborg and Ray-Ray, err.. Raven creating a set of magical pants. So far things are off to a silly and satisfying start. Robin overhears this process and makes fun of the pair, donning the pants to poke of on what they are making. From here we get the titular scardey pants as these trousers are made of magic fabric from Raven’s realm.
Whosoever puts on these scaredy pants will see everyone and everything turn into all manner of horrific beings. There is honestly some really interesting monster designs within the book, and some of these creatures are pretty darn scary, especially for a children’s book.
Kudos goes out to artist Marcelo Di Chiara for not only nailing the look of the show, but for infusing some much-needed originality into the story. With the script on hand for issue Chapter 29 writers Heather Nuhfer and Paul Morrissey really allowed for some fantastic art to be featured.
The writing is also on point with this issue. It can be difficult to translate comedy from television to page as so much depends on the motion on the screen, but this issue feels right at home for longtime fans. There are a lot of puns all over the place and the comedy is lighthearted and silly. It’s the sort of comic whose purpose is simply to entertain, and for that I am thankful.
Teen Titans Go! Chapter 29 is a blast for people of all ages. It’s bright and colorful and is well written. There are enough jokes that kids will understand while still throwing a few bits that are directed more toward the parents reading this too. It doesn’t push the genre forward, but that isn’t the point. Sometimes it’s just nice to pick up a book and have a little fun without needing an encyclopedia of backstory.
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for the next chapter!
