TeamSpeak May Be Coming Back

TeamSpeak

Please free us from Discord Hell.

If you were playing team-based games online back in the day, TeamSpeak was a go-to. But at some point in the 2010’s, usage dropped off for whatever reason, and people moved to using Discord.

Which is a shame, as while I’ve never used TeamSpeak, I have had the extreme displeasure of using Discord. And I can safely say that I absofuckinglutely hate everything about the Discord user experience. Also, anyone that thinks that their fan project is safe being uploaded there and only there is likely some sort of lobotomite.

Anyway, imagine the joy some feel after a long decade when they find that TeamSpeak is making (or, rather, been teasing) a comeback. Granted, it never really went away; it merely fell out of favor. But the time is ripe for a comeback; Discord has grown fat, bloated, and lazy. And all it takes to win is to provide a better user experience that doesn’t require clicking through several menus to set up a voice chat.

They’ve also been taking digs at old Discord, including a post linking to Discord’s support page detailing how to delete your account.

They’ve been fairly unsubtle about it all, too, with a number of posts since the beginning of the year about January. Which is unusual, as we all know one thing for sure about January

They’re no longer being quite so vague anymore. Their most recent pinned post implies that, at the time of its creation, something would be happening in a matter of 24 hours. That of course means, dear reader, that it may have already happened as you read this.

But promised are a host of features that’ll be necessary if they’re going to take on Discord. A new, streamlined UI, group chats, servers, bookmarks, even community servers. For that lattermost point, they’ve shown off some for games like Team Fortress 2, Apex Legends, Minecraft, Destiny 2, Warframe, and more.

They also promise screen sharing, camera sharing, 1440p streaming, and multi-streaming, all in a solid 60fps. They even have one secret thing that they’re keeping close to the vest.

And, as noted earlier, they haven’t been afraid to crap on Discord. And, let’s be honest, it’s not like Discord is perfect. Last time I bothered to check in on them, they were busy pissing everyone off, first with NFT integration, then by screwing with everyone’s usernames in probably the most idiotic way possible.

About the only possible hurdle TeamSpeak has is that they require you to pay to run a server. But who knows? That might be the final thing they’re changing. Or not. We’ll know soon enough.
