Pokemon is a phenomenon that shows no signs of stopping. Year after year the series sees continued success on the Nintendo handheld platform of the day. But every now and again the franchise sees a side-story, or mini adventure, pop up online, on the PC, or on a mobile device. Now that looks to be happening again with Pokemon Go.
Pokemon Go a collaboration between Niantic Labs and The Pokémon Company that looks to take the Pokemon experience and bring it outside into the real world. Using the location-based tech provided by Niantic, The Pokemon Company looks to lets trainers take their adventures into their surrounding world. You’ll be able to fight and catch Pokemon the wild, as well as trade your collection with with those around you!
But Pokemon Go is more that just some little augmented reality game, –although that would be cool enough in my book– instead the game also adds in a Bluetooth device that had be dubbed the Pokemon Go Plus. This device from Nintendo is a wristband with a small Pokeball on it. The device will pair with your smartphone and in turn will alert you (via vibration and light) when something is going on somewhere close to your current location. The Pokemon Go Plus will give you a heads up on Pokemon in your area as well as acting as a digital Pokeball as well.
The Pokemon Company’s president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara said,
“Our challenge was to develop a great game for smartphone devices that expressed the core values of Pokémon,”
There is no doubt that Pokemon Go is going to a huge for The Pokemon Company and Nintendo. Not only is it great that we are seeing a property as large as Pokemon spread to new formats, but it’s an important step for Nintendo as they venture into the smartphone market.
