May the 4th has brought news of a new Star Wars film. More importantly, it’s te confirmation of a number of rumors; rumors that Taika Waititi would direct a film in the franchise.
On Monday, Disney announced that they’ve signed Waititi to direct a live-action Star Wars film. Notably, said film is set to premiere in theaters; naturally, said release date is likely far off, considering the state of things right now.
Waititi is set to direct and co-write the screenplay; he’ll be joined on the pen by Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Wilson-Cairns has serious credentials from her work on 1917, which earned her an Oscar. She’s also the co-writer on Edgar Wright’s upcoming Last Night in Soho.
This isn’t Waititi’s first visit to a Galaxy far, far away, however. He directed an episode of The Mandalorian. He also played IG-11 in the season finale of that show. And of course, there’s also his work with Marvel on Thor: Ragnarok and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.
As for when we’ll see the film in theaters? Well, it’s likely a ways off, and not just for the obvious reason. Waititi also has the next Thor film in production, so Star Wars probably won’t see work until Love and Thunder makes it to the tin.
