Supergirl finally answers the mystery of podguy definitively. And just happens to do so in an episode that seems to be missing something in the title. Something to do with Will Smith and greetings for an otherworldly visitor.
Everyone nailed it; it’s Mon-El (unless it really isn’t, the writers might pull that trick). And he practically walks out of the DEO building, trashing people on his way. Hell, he knocks Kara out with his surprise choke throw. No clue if the DEO’s lead bullets would have any effect on him in this continuity, though. They never actually try to shoot him, instead trying to subdue him.
I really haven’t brought up Snapper Carr yet. He seems to be meant as a wall in the absence of Cat. His initial attempt at running things right under Jimmy’s nose is actually successful. It certainly seems like he’s trying to force the characters he interacts with to rise to the occasion. It certainly works out that way, at least; Jimmy gets him to back off by taking control. Snapper’s also completely unwilling to run an incredibly biased piece Kara wrote about Lena Luthor’s alien detector. Not just in the wake of the President’s visit, either; he points out that such naked bias is unacceptable for a journalist.
As far as the unnamed President is concerned, they got Lynda Carter to play her. I was honestly surprised that they actually kept the Wonder Woman references to a minimum. Or rather, they really only had, like, the one. She mentions that, as opposed to Airforce One, Supergirl would be far more impressed with her “other jet“. Kara fangirls over her constantly, assuming that at any given moment she’ll drop some quote that deserves to be immortalized in stone.
Needless to say, when someone tries to kill the President with fire, Kara takes it rather personally. It just has to be the guy that choke slammed her 50 feet through plate glass. She fixates on him to the point that she doesn’t consider anyone else as the attacker. That said, a cop points out to Alex that the DEO agents are bagging evidence wrong. Their suspect gets away again, and the cop offers a team-up. This leads to the cop (Maggie Sawyer) taking her to an unusual dive bar. One that wouldn’t look terribly out of place in one of the Men in Black movies.
Maggie makes it clear that she’s had some relationships with alien women. That’s how she was able to track the guy down; she can just ask, since she’s not unusual at the bar. After squeezing one of the patrons for a clue, they realize that he’s trying to send a message home. A scan shows that he’s not trying to call Krypton, though. He’s trying to call Daxam, which really sets Kara off.
They track his signal to an observatory, where he’s holding the lab tech working there hostage. Kara suddenly hates this guy. She kicks his ass. Hard.
Kara explains the entire thing between them as akin to the Hatfields and McCoys. While Kryptonians and Daxamites are similar, they had very different worldviews, and hated each other. None of that really matters, though; by episode’s end, she realizes that she goofed. And then tells him the fate of their worlds.
The real assassin, however, tries one more time. Her attack fails because Supergirl is there, along with Maggie and Alex. It was one of the bar patrons, who goes by the name Scorcher. She kidnaps Maggie, but they track her down, kick her ass, and retire to the office.
The stinger is the end. J’onn decides to head down to the bar, since while he may be the last of his kind, misery deserves company. And sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name homeworld. One of the bartenders realizes what he is, and tries to leave in haste. J’onn tracks her down outside, however, and she reveals that she’s Martian too.
Overall, this episode of Supergirl, despite some highlights, wound up reminding me of some season 1 episodes. Specifically, some of the lines characters were given wouldn’t be out of place in an earlier episode. My guess is that the nebulous writer I didn’t care for had a hand in that.
Final Thoughts:
- They were surprisingly restrained with the Wonder Woman connection, as stated above.
- I have no idea why they don’t name the President. It’s oddly cumbersome to keep referring to her as such with no other followup.
- I will never figure out why Kara tried to use her heat vision on the fire alien. On the list of things least likely to have an effect…
