Supergirl “Survivors”

Supergirl - Survivors-0

Supergirl dropped M’gann M’orzz in the last minute of last week’s episode. I’m personally wondering how long they can drag the obvious drama of this fact out. The big problem the Arrowverse shows have is letting things play out, though Supergirl’s been better about it than the others.

Hank has Winn put Mon-El through his paces in an attempt to figure out just what powers he has. He doesn’t seem to have heat vision, or freezing breath either. He can’t fly, so he isn’t even a flying brick (though he can leap tall buildings in a single bound). And while he does have super strength, it’s at a lower level than Kara and Clark’s.

That being said, he seems to have the invulnerability down. Still not sure about the lead thing.

He eventually prys a night at a bar out of Winn, against Hank’s orders, mind. Somehow, Winn keeps pace with his drinking without passing out. By the way, they do Miles and Jorge levels of drinking here, so that’s impressive. That said, the night ends when Mon-El breaks a guy’s arm while arm wrestling, and no-sells a punch to the face. How Winn had a BAL low enough to take control of that situation, I have no idea.

Mon-El figures out the real reason he’s being kept in by episode’s end. He has landed on a world of cardboard, and he’s simply not capable of holding back yet. That said, Kara has a change of heart after the larger events of the episode. She decides to have him moved to her custody to help him adjust. After all, she didn’t actually get to do that with her cousin like she was meant to.

I mean, shit, they probably could’ve drank Marion Ravenwood under the table.

The main body of the episode kicks in when Maggie finds a dead alien on the street. To Kara’s amazement, Alex and Maggie synergize really well, setting to work on the case almost immediately. They find the most likely culprit thanks to a chunk of horn left in the victim. He tries to get away, but he’s suddenly kidnapped off the street right in front of them by a team of guys in tactical gear. He begs Alex and Maggie not to let them take him as he’s dragged away, but they were already slightly hurt by his resistance.

J’onn tries to convince M’gann to form the Martian bond with him. It’s a psychic link that would let them share memories, feelings and nothing but the truth. She doesn’t want to, however. There’s clearly a number of reasons for it, but it upsets him that she refuses. To the point where he’s not really acting like himself anymore in regards to her; barging into her apartment when he finds out at least one of her secrets.

An instance of the cape actually holding her back, as well.

Alex and Maggie find out that their culprit was taken to what basically amounts to an alien pitfight. Run by Veronica Sinclair a.k.a. Roulette (Dichen Lachman), the aliens fight for the amusement of National City’s elite. And M’gann just happens to be one of the pits best willing participants. Things go sideways, and Alex’s only backup just happens to crash through the wrong side of the roof. Roulette sics Draaga on her to effect her escape, and boy does he kick Kara’s ass. Alex and Maggie are able to get ahold of a guard’s gun and drive him off, though.

They can’t really touch Roulette, and they’ll have to deal with Draaga. Mon-el just happened to see him fight on Warworld, though, and knows he has an old injury he favors. J’onn, in an attempt to patch things up with M’gann, makes the mistake of meeting her outside the bar. Roulette’s tactical team captures him, and puts him into the ring against M’gann. Roulette orders it to be a fight to the death, against M’gann’s protests. She refuses, and that’s when Draaga gets sent in to deal with the both of them.

The DEO arrives just in time to nab Roulette, and Supergirl jumps into the ring. Round 2 with Draaga goes much better, since she sweeps the leg. They’re unable to keep Roulette in custody, though, since she has friends in high places. Oh, and the stinger is that M’gann is actually a White Martian pretending to be a Green Martian, just like her comics counterpart.

Decidedly less cute that way.

Supergirl has set a few things in motion with this one. I’d personally like to see them roll a bit before they’re resolved. That said, it’s a possibility that they’ll do the usual thing with what’s set up.

Final Thoughts:

  • Mon-El practically made Winn his Vince McMahon just to get a night out of the building.
  • I really hope the Miss Martian thing goes more than 2 or 3 episodes.
  • I basically didn’t mention Kara’s headway against Snapper Carr.
