Supergirl “Strange Visitor From Another Planet”

Supergirl’s has had a spotty first season. But it’s nice to know that the better episodes seem to be back loaded. Also, clever episode title, guys.

Things open up with a guy at the coffee shop asking Kara about Cat Grant, since he heard her mention Cat in passing to her sister. You know, whether the rumors about her were true; can she breathe fire, does she eat babies and hold Satanic rituals with the blood of the innocent, that sort of thing. Kara is too nice to answer in the affirmative, though.Alex points out that the whole point of that conversation was to flirt with her, which Kara, in usual naivete, denies.

Speaking of Cat being awful, you can see the realization set in on Lucy’s face.

Good thing, though, since it turns out the guy is Cat’s long-lost son, Adam. See, Kara decided to finish and send a letter to Adam that Cat left unfinished. Bad move on her part. But a decent chunk of the episode deals with the fallout of this. Long story short, Cat is bad at expressing herself outside of narcissism, and she now has to grapple with emotions like an actual human being.

But moving on. There’s an angry senator that runs on an incredibly anti-alien campaign running for reelection in town, and Cat wants everyone to cover her rally because shit like that is ratings gold. And she just happens to be holding her rally right in front of the Los Angeles National City … City Hall. Which brings the episode title full circle, as that just so happened to be the building used as the exterior of the Daily Planet in the old Superman TV series from the 50’s. History lesson aside, Miranda Crane has all the loonies at her rally. She practically has the Westboro Baptist Church there protesting gay aliens, judging by the signs the people there are carrying.

Supergirl
Shit, lady, why not just have your banners printed in Cyrillic while you’re at it. Kill all the subtlety.

The DEO is there because killing this woman is an evil alien’s wet dream. And wouldn’t you know it, but one shows up. And it wrecks shop before they can even do anything. Even when they catch up with it, Hank freezes up. Kara catches up just in time to save the senator after the alien dragged her into an underground parking lot, though the alien’s nowhere to be found. They then bring her back to the DEO base, for some reason.

Tuns out that the thing that attacked the senator was a White Martian. They basically rose up from beneath the surface of Mars and slaughtered all of the Green Martians, enslaving them and putting them in literal death camps. J’onn surmises that his recent use of his powers drew it here, as all martians share a slight telepathic link. He is unbelievably torn up about this, as he’d hoped to never have to face one again after having escaped Mars.

They’re literally the reason why he’s “the last son of Mars”. So you can at least see why he’s at least a little terrified. Made worse by the fact that it was impersonating the Senator. It kills several DEO agents before Kara comes back into the picture to scare it off. This prompts an attempt to rescue the real senator, assuming she is still alive.

The setup is something you would have to be completely genre blind to miss, however. They split, with J’onn going off on his own, and they somehow both find the senator. Naturally, Alex winds up drawing the short straw on this, her team gets riggedy wrecked, and she gets used by the White Martian as bait for J’onn. J’onn has every intention of giving in to the demands he’s given, because he’s sick of looking over his shoulder, sick of living with the awful memories. Kara does her best to convince him that just giving in like that is not what his family would have wanted in the first place.

It looks like he’s about to just throw in the towel when Kara shows up. He gives her a direct order to get Alex out of there. One which Kara, of course, ignores this order in favor of double teaming the White Martian with J’onn. The fight ends with what I can only imagine was something of a pot shot at Man of Steel.

No, J'onn! Killing goes against the things you say you stand for! That's like giving Batman a gun!

Also, Maxwell Lord’s creepy brain-dead clone-a-Supergirl project nears completion.

Final Thoughts:

  • Lucy is now regretting the decision to work for Cat. Act in haste, repent in leisure, as the saying goes.
  • In all honesty, even though it was clearly CG, that part showing what Mars was like was hard to watch.
  • It’s really funny how they color coded the Senator’s change of heart by the end of the episode. I just have no real idea why she had one.
