Supergirl “For the Girl Who Has Everything”

So this episode of Supergirl is a bit interesting. They decided to adapt a Superman story (one originally written by Alan Moore, no less) for an episode. I’ll take “Things Alan Moor Probably Hates Sight Unseen” for $200, Alex.

I neglected to mention last time that Kara was attacked by Audrey II some plant thing. Which, as it turns out, is the Black Mercy, a creature meant to trap it’s prey in a perfect world designed around their deepest desires. In this case, it’s Kara’s family on Krypton. All of them, including Astra (but not Non). And an 8 to 10-ish Kal-El.

Which explains that casting call people found out about a few weeks ago.

Anyway, Kara doesn’t show up to work, which rouses suspicion, leading Winn and Jimmy to head over to her place with Alex to figure out what the deal is. Alex kicks down the door, immediately calls for a medical evacuation, and Jimmy and Winn are now in the DEO HQ. Which J’onn isn’t terribly happy about, but Alex makes her case forcefully enough that he lets it go. And also gives Winn access to a computer.

The claw is never strong enough for these things. Should’ve gone for the pink gingham Scooby Doo, he was sitting in the open.

The other thing that doesn’t help them much is that there’s a huge sun spot or something that’s screwing with all of their satellites. Which Astra and Non are using to cover their activities. Astra isn’t terribly happy that Non took a very inventive tack with her orders not to kill Kara when she finds out what he did. So much so, that she sneaks up on Alex when she goes back to Kara’s apartment to look for clues as to how to get rid of the thing. Astra tells her what needs to be done, since she still cares about Kara; Kara needs to reject the perfect world being built for her.

And boy, is it perfect. Krypton didn’t blow up, her parents are there. Astra avoided being sent to the Phantom Zone with Non, somehow. There’s no Cat Grant. Honestly, can’t blame her. She does make a token effort to resist the temptation of believing in the false reality around her, but it is the sort of thing that finds another ring of keys to jingle in front of your face whenever you try to question it.

They just have one problem left when it comes to getting Kara to reject that reality and substitute… uh, the actual reality. The VR tech they need won’t be finished for days, and this thing is sort of a decaying death. So they call an audible and get Maxwell Lord to finish it for them, promising some minor thing to get him to do it.

Alex gets into the dreamscape, and finds Kara after a bit of wandering around. The world around her, however, isn’t happy to see her. After a short exchange, Kara smacks her with a state she’d made for her father, knocking Alex out. She wakes up in the courtroom, and, as she’s being sentenced to the Phantom Zone, makes a plea to Kara’s nature, snapping her out of the fantasy.

Non questions Astra’s loyalty, since he noticed she left earlier. She forcefully states her belief in their plan and that convinces him. They move forward with their plan, which involves sneaking some tech onto satellite dish equipment.

Kara’s pissed, since she just lost all of the important people in her life for a second time, and Alex lets her know she can thank Non for that. They’ve figured out by this point that Astra and Non were using the solar flare to cover their movements, and just barely manage to track them down. Kara delivers one hell of a beatdown on Non. Honestly, his experience is no match to how very, very angry with him she is. She really wails on him.

On the other hand, J’onn and Alex deal with Astra. Honestly, it’s somewhat surprising that J’onn all but loses, despite putting up a good fight. What’s doubly surprising is when Alex gives Astra the flower girl treatment with a kryptonite machete.

Supergirl
This was a curve ball. Yes, seriously, good on them for surprising me.

I honestly didn’t think that they were going to kill Astra outright like that. Granted, I knew the blade was going to come into play, since they showed Alex grabbing it, but that was a gutsy move. And since J’onn lies to Kara to cover for Alex, it’s going to be a problem down the line. Don’t know which episode of Supergirl it’s going to be, but it’s going to happen.

Final Thoughts:

  • I guess J’onn is technically Wonder Woman, Jimmy is Batman, and Winn is (Jason Todd) Robin.
  • I left out the bits where J’onn masquerades as Kara to help her keep her job at CatCo.
  • Supposedly they’re crossing over with The Flash this season. No relevance, just been on my mind
  • Nobody brought her cash. For what else can you give the girl who has everything?
