Supergirl “Fight or Flight”

Supergirl

They finally did it. They showed faceless shadowed Superman again. And it only took a few episodes past the pilot, too.

Kara really blows it during the interview. Cat Grant is a manipulative genius, and Kara’s sort of a dork, so of course she spills way more info than she should. You know you saw it coming. After she lets out that she and Superman are cousins, she flies off, declaring the interview over. which is a huge mistake, because while it ends any chance of her letting the public know anything else, it also kills any chances at damage control. Cat Grant decides to write the article herself, and acts like the procrastinating prima donna you’d expect. What’s even better is how she expects praise to be heaped on her after it’s done. It’s a crazy inversion of my writing expectations; I’m certain everything I write is crap, and I nervously await the consequences to land upon me.

They’re really trying to ship Kara/Jimmy. It’s just really unlikely for a number of reasons, though maybe they’ll ignore all of that. Lord knows, we’ve got a Jimmy Olsen who lifts, why the fuck not? Alex points out that Kara looks at him like he’s one of the sticky buns she keeps devouring. She can literally shove the damn things down her gullet because yellow sun, or whatever. All I’m saying is, one of us eats at Cinnabon, the doctors are going to saw off our foot. She goes through two of the things onscreen, and half an order of potstickers later. I think one of the writers is on a diet, and needed some wish fulfillment.

The big threat this week is Reactron. If that name sounds stupid, you can blame Jimmy, ’cause he came up with it. Well, this Jimmy may be ripped, but he still can’t name things for crap. Cisco would be disappointed.

Yeah, I'm talking about you, "Elastic Lad".
Yeah, I’m talking about you, “Elastic Lad”.

If Reactron doesn’t sound familiar to you, don’t feel too bad. From the best I’ve been able to find, he’s sort of a super-family Z-stringer villain. Which is probably why they let Jimmy name him. The best I can tell, he was on the Suicide Squad for about a femtosecond, and for some reason is exactly what Supergirl fears when affected by the Scarecrow’s fear gas. Also, he’s covered in radiation burns, but still has a full head of hair. So I guess the one point I can find in his favor is that he doesn’t know when to die from a lethal dose of radiation.

Motherfucker! You are hard to look at!

His plan? Since he can’t kill Superman, whom he blames for the death of his wife and his current state of being, he’ll kill his cousin so that Supes might know some of his pain. You might imagine how stupid this plan is. Kryptonians + yellow sun = God mode. The only way he’s got her beat is in experience. And even then, not really. His radioactive suit gets damaged during the battle, and he has to get it fixed, since he can’t do it himself. So he compounds his problem by kidnapping National City’s resident billionaire tech baron/asshole, Maxwell Lord, to fix it for him. Which he does. With no twists or traps.

The only thing I like about this smug dick is his taste in beverages.

After the fix up, Supergirl finds him for round two. And, holy shit, does he kick her ass. Like, really badly. So badly that he somehow kncks her unconscious, and was certain to kill her before Superman showed up. Look, guys, we know you want to get Tom Welling to come back and do this. Just do it; stop with this obscured face shit. It’s the sort of thing that becomes lees likely to happen the longer you put it off.

So, wait, why did this screw her up, if it's doing nothing to him?

Anyway, Kara’s kind of pissed off, since she’s been trying to establish herself as a superhero. She’s even more pissed off when she finds out that Jimmy called him with his signal watch. Of all the things I didn’t expect to see in this show, that was one of them.

Anyway, Reactron shows up for round three at the launch party for Cat’s Supergirl article. I will never be so self important as to throw a party for a single article. She takes him out by ripping out his reactor chest piece and wrapping it in lead. so, yeah, he dropped to a metal considered so worthless, alchemists were always trying to turn it into gold.

And near the end of the episode, Jimmy’s old flame, Lucy Lane, shows up. I guess they decided to turn this into a triangle to keep the will they or won’t they going. Only time will tell.

Final Thoughts:

  • They started off with more of those unnecessary lines. I’m going to start knocking off points for this.
  • Kara totally destroys a bust to get a hold of the lead she uses to stop Reactron. I have no idea why a relatively modern setting would have a bust made of lead. Maybe Cat’s just fond of insanity and cancer?
  • Where’s my party? Every time I sit down to write, I know the despair of a blank page.
